I, Too, Am America
Presented by The Ensemble Theatre
In the spirit of Langston Hughes, American poet and leader of the Harlem Renaissance, I, Too, Am America celebrates the contributions that Black people have made to American culture. It is a jazz-infused journey through historic moments of the African American experience including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, playwright Douglas Turner Ward’s Day of Absence, the musical dialogue of slaves through call-and-response, to Mahalia Jackson partnering with Martin Luther King Jr. in the Civil Rights Movement.
Pretty Fire
Presented by The Ensemble Theatre
The lyrical, lifting words of Charlayne Woodard weaves stories of two young sisters in the small world of Albany, New York; of Ku Klux Klan riders burning a cross—the ironic “pretty fire” of the title—in the hilltop black town of Rosignol Hill, Georgia; of three generations of family love, struggle and triumph. The stage becomes crowded with the authentic, mesmerizing experience of contemporary African American life. Pretty Fire is an enthralling celebration of life. Filled with earthy humor, it takes audiences on a universal journey through a world in which the family bond is as strong as steel.
